Our collection of courses for the initial training of California Residential Care Facility Staff aligns with the requirements stated in Section 1569.625 - Training requirements, Section 1569.626 - Training requirements for direct care staff caring for persons with dementia, and Section 1569.696 - Training regarding postural supports, restricted conditions or health services, and hospice care of the California Health and Safety Code.
This collection contains 37 courses, totalling 40.5 hours of training, and is broken into two sections of 20 hours each. The first section, which must be completed before working independently with residents, covers topics including, the physical limitations and needs of the elderly, assisting with ADLs and iADLs, residents’ rights, medication self-administration, the psychosocial needs of the elderly, emergency response and fire safety, infection control, diversity, inclusion and cultural competence, the philosophy of hospice care, the emotional problems of terminal illness, and final care of the dying person. Six hours of dementia-specific training provide a foundation in dementia care and include, an introduction to dementia care, person centered dementia care, understanding dementia, communication strategies in dementia care, managing challenging behaviors in dementia, and reducing safety risks for clients with Alzheimer's Disease.
The second section, which should be completed within 4 weeks of employment, covers topics including, the role of personal care staff, professionalism, the reporting of elder abuse, communication, observation and reporting, measuring vital signs, incident reporting, nutrition and hydration, range of motion, ambulation and transfers, safe patient handling, behavioral supports, and pain management. Six additional hours of dementia-specific training include, the science of dementia, the psychological, social, and physical needs of people with dementia, activities for older adults with dementia, dementia inclusive communities, dementia palliation, and assisting older adults with dementia with bathing and personal care.
